Hardware stores see an influx of customers before the bad weather

MILWAUKEE – As we get closer to this weekend’s snowfall, many people are getting ready.

With the end of 2021, many businesses did not have long hours on New Years Eve, but many customers came to prepare for the snow to come.

Salt. Excavators. Snowblowers. They are all needed finally, as the wintry weather that is likely to stay is heading towards Southeastern Wisconsin.

Buyers like Ramiro Cruz were on the hunt for the essentials as he braced for inches of snow.

“Well, it’s that time of year. So. I have to be prepared,” said Cruz.

Across town, many hardware stores closed early for New Years Eve. Over the phone with TMJ4 News, many confirmed seeing rushes of customers before closing.

“I want to buy a salt and salt spreader,” said Tom Abresch, a customer of a True Value hardware store in northwest Milwaukee.

“I’m just trying to stay one step ahead. You have the salt ready. I’m just trying to stay one step ahead,” Abresch added.

The store itself is also trying to stay one step ahead. Off camera, the store’s duty manager said some of the top selling items are snow throwers, roof rakes, shovels and of course … salt.

He says backorders for some snowblower parts have been plagued by COVID-related supply chain issues, but nothing too big for customers to notice.
