Demolition of former iconic Rochester restaurant now delayed

If you’re wondering why the old Michaels Building on Broadway in downtown Rochester, Minnesota isn’t gone yet, get in line. Many people have asked.

Michaels is not Torn up Down because the negotiations Are Down

Negotiations? You may have thought that it was all of Titan Development working on this space, and that there was only one building. But really, it’s Titan Development and the Pappas family, and five buildings, four owned by Titan and one owned by a group of Pappas family members.

In a story by Jeff Kiger, in the Rochester Post Bulletin, it was explained this way

Tom Hexum, who represents the Pappas family, explained that the demolition permit had been given the green light in the hope that Titan would sign an insurance and liability agreement regarding the demolition. While Titan began demolition work on buildings it owns, Hexum said no agreement on a contract involving the Pappas property was ever signed.

Thus, the demolition of the Pappas family property has been halted and it now appears that the Pappas family wish to sell their property to Titan. And that’s why you haven’t seen the demolition of the Michaels restaurant space anymore. The city has approved demolition permit extensions, so by spring this will hopefully be sorted out.

In the meantime, the sidewalk in front of the old restaurant will be reopened.
