AMD and Acceleration Robotics announce collaboration


VITORIA-GASTEIZ, Spain, September 19, 2022 — Acceleration Robotics, a robotic semiconductor startup based in the Basque Country, Spain, will collaborate with AMD, the industry leader in high-performance and adaptive computing, to expand its presence in the robotics market through the development of new robotic capabilities for AMD Kria systems-on-modules (SOMs) and adaptive systems-on-chips (SoCs).

Prior to AMD’s acquisition of Xilinx, Acceleration Robotics had worked closely with Xilinx to create various robotics-specific hardware designs and achieve the goal of enabling roboticists to use Xilinx’s adaptive computing solutions with the robot operation (ROS). The relationship now extends to AMD products optimized for ROS 2, which features a more modern and popular robotics framework.

ROS is the common language in robotics and most companies that build real robots use it today. The ROS-based robotics market was valued at $42.69 billion in 20211 and is projected to reach $87.92 billion by 2030. Moreover, around 55% of the total commercial robots that will be shipped in 2024 will use ROS2. The Acceleration Robotics and AMD collaboration will focus on improving robotic computations with ROS 2 in several areas, including robotic messaging infrastructure, robotic perception, control or navigation, among others.

Víctor Mayoral-Vilches, former system architect at Xilinx and founder of Acceleration Robotics, will lead the collaboration on the Acceleration Robotics side. Their results are partially disclosed by the ROS 2 hardware acceleration working group and have contributed back to the ROS community: “We are delighted to see our continued efforts with Xilinx extending to AMD and look forward close collaboration with their engineering teams on the production of architectural plans for robotics using ROS. AMD’s technology is perfectly suited for robots, where latency and determinism take precedence over everything else. We’re especially excited to explore how AMD FPGAs, adaptive SoCs and SOMs, and other compute solutions can be combined to create robot-specific processing units, what we call robotic processing units ( SPR)”.
